Produce Traceability Initiative (PTI) is a voluntary industry standard that is sponsored by United Fresh Produce Association, Produce Marketing Association, and Canadian Produce Marketing Association. Their goal is to develop a standardized approach to food traceability that organization members can use to quickly and efficiently trace items within the produce food chain. Information on the Initiative, including best practices and implementation action plans, can be found on the PTI web site.
At the heart of the Track and Trace solution is the identification of items within the supply chain. The item identification within PTI is based on the Global Trade Item Number or GTIN that is administered by GS1, a global standards organization with worldwide membership.
